3.Poor Carbon-to-Nitrogen Ratio: The ideal carbon-to-nitrogen ratio in a compost pile is approximately 30:1. If there is too much nitrogen in the pile (such as from adding too many fresh grass clippings or food scraps), the compost can become overly wet and smelly. If there is too much carbon in the pile (such as from adding too many dry leaves or wood chips), the compost can take longer to break down.
